Dr MICHAEL O'CONNOR is a lecturer at St Michael’s College in the University of Toronto. He studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and historical theology at the University of Oxford, where he completed a doctorate on early modern biblical exegesis. He has published articles on the Bible in renaissance humanist and reformation contexts and on historical and liturgical aspects of church music.
His energies are currently divided between academic administration and teaching—the latter including courses on music in the Christianity and Culture Program in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts and Science. A former Warden of the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) in the UK, he is a member of the Board of the newly-established RSCM Canada. He has been a member of the international Advisory Board of the Theology Through the Arts Project since 2000.
Michael O'Connor's interests include the relationship between the Bible and the arts (especially music), the theology of worship, and the theology of music. He has given retreats and workshops on the theology and spirituality of (liturgical) music for parish musicians, choristers, and monastic musicians. His most recent work, a consideration of the singing of Jesus, will be published in a collection edited by Jeremy Begbie called Musical Theology (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, forthcoming 2007).
