DANIEL TAYLOR's debut at Glyndebourne in Handel's Theodora was greeted with critical praise and followed on his operatic debut in Jonathan Miller's production of Handel's Rodelinda (recorded for EMI). He receives invitations from an ever-widening circle of the world's leading early and modern instrument music ensembles, appearing in opera (Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco, Rome, Welsh National Opera, Canadian Opera), oratorio (Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists, Les Arts Florissants, Collegium vocale de Ghent, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The Gabrieli Consort, the King's Consort, The Academy of Ancient Music), symphonic works (Cleveland, Dallas, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Toronto, Rotterdam, Montreal), recital (Vienna Konzerthaus; Frick Collection, New York; Forbidden Concert Hall, Beijing; Lufthansa Baroque Festival and Wigmore Hall, London), and film (Podeswa's Five Senses for Fineline-winner at Cannes and also of a Genie).
Daniel Taylor has made more than 60 recordings, which include Bach Cantatas with the English Baroque Soloists/Gardiner (DG ARCHIV), Renaissance duets with James Bowman and the actor Ralph Fiennes (BIS), Handel's Rinaldo (winner of a Gramophone Award) with Cecilia Bartoli and the Academy of Ancient Music/Hogwood (DECCA), Handel's Theodora with Les Arts Florissants/Christie (ERATO), Cantatas 'Before Bach' with the Collegium Vocale de Ghent/Herreweghe (HARMONIA MUNDI), Zelenka Masses with Bernius (SONY), Sakamoto's pop-opera Life with Carreras and the Dalai Lama (SONY), Dowland songs (ATMA - Winner of the ADISQ prize), Lost Objects with 'Bang on a Can' (TELDEC) and Bach Cantatas with the Bach Collegium Japan (BIS). Daniel Taylor is also featured on many of the Bach Cantata recordings with Sir John Eliot Gardiner due for release over the next five years. His first recital disc – “The Voice of Bach” – is due for release on the Sony Classical/BMG Masterworks label.
Notable engagements include Daniel's tours with Gardiner/Monteverdi Choir (Handel Messiah and Israel in Egypt), a recital tour to South America with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Emma Kirkby, appearances at the BBC Proms, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Toronto Symphony/McGegan, a European tour of the St. Matthew Passion with the Gabrieli Consort (McCreesh), his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra (Handel Israel in Egypt), Bernstein Chichester Psalms with the Philadelphia Orchestra/Dutoit, the Taiwan National Symphony (Schnittke Faust Cantata), Bach Cantatas with Herreweghe/Collegium Vocale de Ghent (recording for Harmonia Mundi), Israel in Egypt with McGegan/St. Louis Symphony, Messiah with the Bach Collegium Japan, Handel’s Saul with Helmut Rilling and the International Bach Academy Stuttgart (recording for Hansler Classics) and recitals in Tokyo, Toronto, Barcelona, Sao Paolo and Lyon. In addition Daniel recently took the title role in a new production of Gluck's Orfeo for Opera North at the Edinburgh Festival and made his Wigmore Hall debut with the King's Consort.
Recent and upcoming performances include Messiah with Koopman/Munich Radio-Orchestra and King/Detroit Symphony, Handel Jephtha with Manze/Hanover Radio Orchestra, Glass with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Orff with the Toronto Symphony/Oundjan, Jonathan Miller's staging of the St. Matthew Passion at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Bach Christmas Oratorio with the National Arts Centre Orchestra/Pinnock, Bach St. Matthew Passion with the Kammerchor Stuttgart/Bernius, Bach Christmas Oratorio with Tafelmusik/Taurins and Handel Messiah with the North Carolina Symphony/Llewelyn. Daniel also recorded a DVD of the Bach B minor Mass with Nelson/L'ensemble Orchestrale de Paris for EMI and will soon record Handel's Jephtha with McCreesh/Gabrieli Consort for DGARCHIV.
Daniel is Founder and Artistic Director of the Theatre of Early Music, a period-instrument ensemble and professional choir based in Montreal comprised of musicians from all over the world. The Theatre of Early Music recently signed a long-term contract with the BIS label. On the TEM's first recording for Bis, Couperin's Leçons de Ténèbres, Daniel sang with countertenor Robin Blaze; a second recording featured Daniel with legendary countertenor James Bowman and the actor Ralph Fiennes. Other recordings will include the continuation of their highly-praised Bach Cantata series and the Bach setting of the Pergolesi Stabat Mater with soprano Emma Kirkby.
Daniel completed his undergraduate work at McGill University (Literature, Music, Philosophy), and his graduate degree at the University of Montreal (Music and Religion), furthering his studies with leaders of the Baroque-specialist movement in Europe. He continues now with Michael Chance. Daniel Taylor is Artistic Director of the Festival of Music in Saint-Sauveur and a Visiting Professor at McGill University.
