Grammy award-winning conductor and Bach scholar Helmuth Rilling returns to Toronto October 22 – November 3, 2007 to lead Canada’s Toronto Bach Festival- an annual in-depth journey into the magic of the music of J.S. Bach.

Dynamic Music Education for All!
Artistic Director and Conductor, Doreen Rao, envisions the Toronto Bach Festival as a dynamic intersection between musical performance and audience education.

The Mentorship Model
The 2007 Bach/Rilling residency will be centered upon the Bach St. John Passion BWV 245 in a ‘Lecture-Concert Series’; an intense educational week of study (Oct 22-26) at the lively University of Toronto Faculty of Music:

  • BachTalks - (Noon) Leading scholars and theologians debate the issues & music
  • Discovery Series - (2-5pm) Open rehearsals and conducting master classes
  • Intimate Evenings - (6pm) Lecture-concerts with professional artists

Additional Bach Festival ’07 Events:

  • Toronto Sings Bach: 6pm, Mondays Sep. 17, 24 and Oct. 1, 15 chorale sing-alongs, organ meditations, biblical commentaries. Church of the Redeemer.
  • St. John Passion Film & Commentary: Victoria University hosts Monday 22 Oct. 8pm.
  • Organ Meditations on Bach: Tues 23 Oct. – Thurs 25 Oct. 8pm, Church of the Redeemer.
  • Trinitas: Feature concert on the themes of love, death and hope. Bach Festival Orchestra, MacMillan Singers, soloists. Sat 27 Oct. 7:30pm, St. Basil’s Church.
  • Cantata Service: Bach’s Jesu der du meine Seele BWV 78. Sunday 28 Oct. 11:00am, Trinity St. Paul’s United Church. Helmuth Rilling & Doreen Rao conduct.
  • The Toronto Symphony Orchestra presents two full-length performances of Bach’s St. John Passion BWV 245 conducted by Maestro Rilling at Roy Thomson Hall (Nov 1 and 3, 8pm).
